Campbellsville, KY - History was made last weekend as the Howard Community College Dragons debuted their new women's flag football team in a four-game slate.
Taking part in the Finely Flag Football Frenzy hosted by Campbellsville University, the Dragons became the first Maryland-based JUCO program to field a women's flag football team, marching their way into the history books. As for the games themselves, the new program played valiantly but was unable to scrape together a win during the weekend.
The closest the Dragons would come to victory was game one against Rockford University. The Dragons kept it close in the first half, aided by solid running from quarterback
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, FL/Long Reach) and a nice interception by
Dye Boiro Balde (Girona, Spain/IES Vallvera). Putman would score the first touchdown in program history late in the fourth quarter on a QB-keeper as the Dragons fell 31-6.
The Dragons run-heavy attack would be exploited in the next three games, and their opponents made sure to shut down the attack. Howard struggled to move the ball and make stops of defense, losing the remaining games 68-0 to Siena Heights, 40-0 to Milligan, and 34-0 to host Campbellsville.
The Dragons will next play in the NCFFL Championships in two weeks time, facing off against Villa Maria College on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM!
