Ellicott City, MD - The penultimate home games of the 2025 Howard Community College softball season did not go according to plan, as the Dragons were swept by the College of Southern Maryland Hawks.
A pair of lopsided losses saw the Dragons struggle with errors all day long. The Dragons committed 13 total errors during the series, and were held to just one hit in the first game. The Hawks scored 34 total runs on the Dragons, the most any team has been able to score against them all season.
Game One: Hawks 19, Dragons 0
The Dragons suffered their most lopsided loss of the season in game one, falling to the Hawks 19-0. A trio of Southern Maryland home runs in the opening innings paved the way for a ten-run third inning that all but ended the contest.
Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton) gave the Dragons their only hit, while Howard's pitchers managed just two total strikeouts. The Dragons made seven errors, including two on one play that allowed an inside-the-park home run.
Game Two: Hawks 15, Dragons 3
Game two would go slightly better for the Dragons, as they kept the contest competitive until the sixth inning. After trailing 6-0 early, Howard got their first runs of the contest thanks to a throwing error that brought home
Madison Falby (Laurel, MD/Reservoir), and an RBI single by
Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales). Southern Maryland would score nine unaswered runs to take a 15-2 lead into the sixth, where the Dragons scored their final run off a sacrifice ground out by
Holly Ryan (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach).Once again, it was six errors by the Dragons that allowed Southern Maryland to pull so far ahead.
Giana Sablan (Hagatna, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) managed three hits for the Dragons, including two doubles.
Sophia Steele (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) pitched a complete game, recording three striekouts.
The Dragons next face nationally-ranked WVU Potomac State College on Friday in a crucial doubleheader. Game one will begin at 3:00 PM.
