Keyser, WV - The Howard Community College Dragons' softball team were swept last weekend by the WVU Potomac State Catamounts in a two-game series.
The Dragons managed just two runs against the #25 ranked Catamounts, losing both games via run-rule. The losses dropped the Dragons to 15-20 on the season.
Game One: Catamounts 8, Dragons 0
The Dragons opened their first game with
Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) taking the mound. Perkes was able to shut down the side in the first, but a grand slam early in the second made it 4-0 Catamounts. From there, Potomac State ran up the score to secure an 8-0 run-rule win after just five innings. Perkes gave the Dragons their only hit of the contest, while also recording two strikeouts. The Dragons three pitchers combined for four total strikeouts.
Game Two: Catamounts 10, Dragons 2
Howard fell into an early 4-0 hole in game two, but battled back in the second.
Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton) struck out on a dropped third strike, but a throwing error allowed
Giana Sablan (Hagatna, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) to score. Unfortunately, the three-run deficit would be the closest Howard would get as Potomac State extended the lead to 7-1. A third-inning sac-fly from
Sophia Steele (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) did bring home Perkes, but Potomac State put the game away with three more runs in the final two innings.
Four Dragons recorded at least one hit, with
Madison Falby (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) hitting the only extra-base hit. Howard's pitchers recorded three total strikeouts.
The Dragons next face CCBC Catonsville on Wednesday, April 23 in a rematch of last season's first round playoff matchup.
