Ellicott City, MD - Howard Community College's losing streak continued Wednesday afternoon, as the Dragons lost both games of their doubleheader with the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals.
After honoring their sophomore players prior to first pitch, the Dragons suffered their sixth and seventh consecutive losses of the season. Howard dropped to 15-22 on the year and 6-10 in conference play, with both losses coming via run-rule.
Game One: Cardinals 14, Dragons 5
An early Catonsville home run set the tone for Wednesday's games, as Howard found themselves down 1-0 early. The Dragons would fire back scoring twice on a Catonsville throwing error to take a 2-1 lead after one inning. Early in the second, the Dragons forced two outs but then gave up five unanswered runs. This was a constant theme of the day, as every time the Dragons got Catonsville down to two strikes, the Cardinals would immediately extend their lead.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the second, Howard quickly went to work.
Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) hit a hug double to bring a run, and a deep
Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) single allowed two more batters to score. Now down 6-5, the Dragons just needed to keep Catonsville from extending their lead, but a two-run home run in the top of the third took the wind out of Howard's sail. Catonsville shut down the Dragons batters over the next three innings, while hitting two more home runs and adding six additional runs to make the final 14-5.
Webb led the Dragons with two hits and two RBIs along with a stolen base. The Dragons managed two extra-base hits, and five different Dragons scored at least one hit.
Game Two: Cardinals 12, Dragons 2
Game two began as a pitcher's duel between Howard's
Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) and Catonsville's Emily Fagan. After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke the tie with a solo home run. Howard quickly responded, as
Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) and
Morgan Ryan (Laurel, MD/Atholton) knocked home RBI singles to give Howard a 2-1 lead. This would be as close as the Dragons would come, as Catonsville scored 11 unanswered runs over the next two innings. This included three straight home runs.
Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) provided the Dragons with two hits and a run, almost legging out a triple late in the game. Howard's three pitchers combined for five total strikeouts.
The Dragons next face off against Allegany College of Maryland this Saturday for their final conference opponents of the season. Game one of the doubleheader will be at 1:00 PM.
