Dragons Snap Losing Streak, Clinch Playoff Berth

Cumberland, MD - After dropping their last seven games, the Howard Community College Dragons softball snapped their losing streak with a sweep of Allegany College of Maryland.

The Dragons won both games by the skin of their teeth, taking game one after a sixth-inning comeback and game two in extra innings. The victories ensured tht the Dragons will participate in the upcoming Region 20 tournament starting this weekend.

Game One: Dragons 8, Trojans 7
Game one was a tight back-and-forth contest for the Dragons, as they had to come back multiple times against a pesky Trojans squad. Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) smacked a lead-off home run to give the Dragons their first lead, but Allegany immediately scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the lead. After a scoreless second inning, Howard retook the lead thanks to three straight hits from Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton), Perkes, and Courtney Johnson (Fulton, MD/Reservoir).

Leading 4-3 entering the fifth, the Dragons allowed four unanswered runs from the Trojans thanks to a string of errors. But in the top of the seventh, Howard managed four runs of their own to chip away at Allegany's lead. Howard's Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) then shut down the Trojans over the last two innings to clinch the Dragon's first win in seven games.

Perkes led the Dragons with three hits, three runs, and two RBIs. Courtney Johnson (Fulton, MD/Reservoir) had two doubles and two RBIs, while Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton) had two hits and two runs. Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) recorded three strikeouts on the mound.

Game Two: Dragons 11, Trojans 8
Game two was close fought as well, with both teams exchanging runs in the opening innings. Howard took control of the game in the third, scoring six unanswered runs over the next two innings. Micah Howell (Columbia, MD/Atholton) managed to shut down the Trojans hitters on the mound, while Raegan Perkes (Laurel, MD/Laurel) continued to dominate the plate with three runs and stealing home.

Allegany rallied in the seventh, tying the game at 8-8 and forcing extra innings. Both teams would get an extra base runner for the eighth inning, as Howard sent Victoria Wright (Columbia, MD/Glenelg) to pinch run. Wright would score the go-ahead run after Howell slapped a double to left field, and and after an additional runner got aboard, Marissa Webb (Hanover, MD/Mount de Sales) smacked her 17th home run of the season to give Howard an 11-8 lead. The Dragons then shut down the Trojans in the bottom of the eighth to seal the sweep.

Perkes had three hits, three runs, and a stolen base. Webb smacked three runs, three hits, and three RBIs, while Courtney Johnson (Fulton, MD/Reservoir) hd three hits, three RBIs, and two runs. Howell recorded two strikeouts on the mound.

The Dragons next face Pennsylvania Highlands Community College on Tuesday, April 29 to close out their regular season, before facing CCBC Catonsville in the Region 20 tournament.
