Columbia, MD - Friday afternoon was all Dragons as Howard Community College rolled to their second win of the season in a 5-1 take down of the Frederick Community College Cougars!
The Dragons avenged a tough loss to the Cougars suffered last season as they out-shot Frederick 42-9 and controlled possession throughout the game. Four different Dragons scored, with
Denny Mora (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) scoring a hat trick of assists. The victory moves the Dragons to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in Region 20 play.
Howard's overwhelming pressure was evident from the start, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half.
Kiar Sani (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/St. Ragueal Church) scored the first two goals off identical passes from
Denny Mora (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern).Â
Yeabsira Tesfaye (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/St. Ragueal Church) made it 3-0 late in the period off another pass from Mora. Howard's defense suffocated the Cougars, allowing just two shots the entire half.
Donnie Frayer (Odenton, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) scored quickly in the second half to make it 4-0, but Frederick seemingly woke up. The Cougars immediately responded with a goal, the first points scored on the Dragons this season. Frederick was able to get several more shots off in the half, but they never truly threatened the Dragons. In the 86th minute,
Jackson Costell (Ellicott City, MD/Glenelg) scored off a free kick to make the final 5-1.
Howard recorded 42 total shots with 26 on goal. Tesfaye led the Dragons with eight shots and five shots on goal, while Sani recorded two goals. Mora had three assists in an excellent day on the pitch. Keeper
Jonathan Sanchez (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) made six saves, while the defense locked down Frederick all day long.
Next up for the Dragons is a Tuesday afternoon showdown with WVU Potomac State College on September 2 at 2:00 PM.
