Mora Strikes Four Times as Dragons Hold Off Lakers and Lightning!

Columbia, MD - The Howard Community College Dragons survived two separate weather delays to take care of business on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Garrett Lakers 7-0.

Behind four goals from Denny Mora (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern), the Dragons put together their best performance of the season. Four different Dragons scored at least one goal, as Howard out-shot the Lakers 26-8 and recorded their third shutout of the season.

Saturday's game started with a 30-minute weather delay for lightning and a thunderstorm. When action resumed, Mora wasted no time in scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from Predrag Ilic (Nis, Serbia/Gymnasium Stevan Sremac). Bryan Barrientos (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) scored minutes later to make it 2-0 Dragons in the first.

Mora was just getting started, as he scored his second goal off a pass from Donnie Frayer (Odenton, MD/Annapolis Area Christian). A third goal just one minute later made it 4-0, and gave Mora a first half hat trick. Howard led comfortably 4-0 at the half, and pulled most of their starters for the second half.

With the Lakers struggling to get any offensive pressure against Howard, the Dragons continued racking up goals in the second half. Donnie Frayer (Odenton, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) scored ten minutes into the half to make it 5-0, with sophomore Sebastian Fonseca (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) getting the assist in his season debut. Mora added his fourth goal of the game in the 64th minute, followed by a Yeabsira Tesfaye (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/St. Ragueal Church) goal two minutes later. Now leading 7-0, the Dragons would cruise to the win as lightning ended the contest early.

Mora finished his career day with six shots and four goals. Predrag Ilic (Nis, Serbia/Gymnasium Stevan Sremac) added five shots, while five different Dragons recorded an assist. Jonathan Sanchez (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) and David Whitehurst (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) recorded a shutout in net, with Sanchez recording all four saves for the Dragons.

Howard next hosts Division I school Hagerstown on Thursday, September 11 at 4:00 PM.
