Catonsville, MD - With their season on the line, the Howard Community College Dragons put together their best performance of the season Wednesday night with a 57-28 thrashing of CCBC Catonsville.
The Dragons avenged a big loss to their rivals from last season with their most complete game of the year, clinching a playoff berth in the process. Two Dragons scored in double digits as Howard finished their season with a perfectly even 15-15 record.
The Dragons defense immediately went to work Wednesday night, not allowing the Cardinals to score double digits in any quarter. The Dragons outscored the Cardinals 16-5 in the first quarter, aided by excellent shooting from
London Galbraith (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) and
Hannah Chambers (Columbia, MD/Hammond). Chambers kept the pressure going in the second quarter on offense, which was badly needed as turnover troubles hit the Dragons. However, Catonsville found themselves in foul trouble and were never able to recover.
Leading 27-14 at the half, the Dragons erupted in the third quarter. Howard outscored the Cardinals 22-9, with
Naomi Williams (Odenton, MD/Meade) scored seven points after a quiet first half. By the start of the fourth, Howard had the game all but sealed up. Consistent pressure forced 15 turnovers by the Cardinals, and the Dragons out-rebounded their rival 53-31.
Galbraith finished as the leading scorer for the Dragons with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Chambers had a fantastic night with eleven points, nine rebounds, and a steal.
Emmanuella Oga (Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) added nine points. five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Noami Williams scored nine points, nine rebounds, and two steals.
Jolie Hamilton (Baltimore, MD/Forest Park) was the leading bench player with seven points, 12 rebounds, and a block.
The Dragons win secures a postseason berth as either the fifth or sixth seed, as several games remain to be played. They will either face WVU Potomac State College or Cecil College next week on the road on Tuesday, March 3. Time, location, and opponent will be announced this weekend.
