Columbia, MD - Howard Community College put together a dominant display during their home opener on Tuesday, smashing Carroll Community College 9-0.
Behind five goals from freshman
Biruk Yitayew, the Dragons built a 7-0 halftime lead. Howard's offense controlled the pace of the contest from the start, outshooting the Lynx 37 to 1.
Carroll would launch the first shot of the game seconds into the contest, the only clean shot the Lynx got off all game. Howard responded with a flurry of shots, and freshman
Ethan Quander would connect one on in the seventh minute to make it 1-0.
Howard's offense kept up the pressure deep into the first half, adding six more goals before halftime.
Kiar Sani scored twice, while Yitayew connected on four goals including on right before the half to make it 7-0 Dragons.
The second half saw the Dragons focus on tidying up their play, with more focused passes and precision. Carroll would finally get some offensive looks, but stout defensive play from the Dragons made life easy for goalkeeper Alejandro Dealvarez. Yitayew added a fifth goal in the 59th minute, giving him the most goals in a game since Anderson Marroquin scored seven against Southern Maryland in 2019.
Carson Feeser wrapped up the day with the ninth Dragons goal in the final minute, giving Howard a 9-0 win via mercy rule.
Howard dominated the stat sheets, out-shooting Carroll 37-1 managing eight corner kicks to zero for the Lynx. Yitayew recorded 12 shots, nine shots on goal and his five goals.
Carson Feeser and
Yeabsira Tesfaye each recorded four shots, while
Eben Koffi and
Lucas Britos added three shots each. Tesfaye had two assists, while
Kiar Sani had three shots, two goals, and an assist.
The Dragons next face Prince George's Community College on Friday, August 28 at 2:30 PM.
