Hughesville, MD - The second cross country meet of the season did not disappoint for the Howard Community College Dragons, as both men's and women's team recorded strong results at the Seahawk Classic on Friday.
Led by strong performances from
Savannah Wilson and
Katy Spence, the Dragons' women's team finished a season-best second in their race. The men's team came home third overall in their race, led by a fourth-place overall finish from
Samuel Venegas.
The Seahawk Classic featured a rough, tricky course with multiple hills and wooded sections winding through rural Maryland, leading to large gaps developing between the competition. Despite the tricky course and the tough four-year competition, the Dragons held firm.
The women's team kicked off the afternoon amidst light showers, with Wilson and Spence taking the early lead. Wilson led the way for Howard, finishing seventh overall with a time of 31:00.7. Spence came home tenth overall, beating out St. Mary's College of Maryland's Aurora Della-Giacoma by .3 seconds in a photo finish.
Myah Van Jones came home 13th with a time of 34:31, managing to hold off SMCM's Elle Wilson by less than ten seconds. Wrapping up the women's race for the Dragons was
Nyla Mathew in 18th with a 38:33.1, and
Cynthia Crump in 21st with a 47:11.6.
The men's race got off to a great start for the Dragons, with Venegas taking an early lead. While he would surrender the top spot, the sophomore runner came home fourth overall for the Dragons with a 30:16 flat.
Nico Salvia was second-best for Howard, finishing 13th with a 33:54.8.
Gabriel Kondeh managed to hold off Goucher College's Antoine Padonou by two seconds in a close finish for 20th, coming home with a time of 38:17.1.
Jaden Goins wrapped up the day for Howard with a 40:00.1 in 22nd.
The Dragons next head to Salisbury University on Saturday, October 3 for the Don Cathcart Invitational.
