Columbia, MD - Six different Dragons scored and
Yeabsira Tesfaye recorded a hat trick as the Howard Community College Dragons defeated the Hagerstown Community College Hawks 8-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The #11-ranked Dragons scored eight unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 early in a game affected by heavy winds and pouring rain. The win moves Howard to 6-1-1 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
Hagerstown would strike first when Josh Candia scored in the 15th minute, though goal keeper
Julian Gugino nearly knocked it out of the net at the last second. Howard proceeded to dominate the rest of the match, out-shooting the Hawks 33-8 and recording ten corner kicks to just three for Hagerstown.
Howard would score their first goal in the 26th minute as
Angel Giron-Ramos scored a beautiful crossing goal off a pass from
Nelson Hernandez. Tesfaye then scored two quick goals in the 30th and 34th minutes to make it 3-1 Dragons, the latter of which was assisted by Hernandez. Hernandez then added his own goal in the 43rd as he split three Hagerstown defenders on a booming shot to make it 4-1 Dragons at the half.
The second half saw the Dragons immediately add to their lead.
Daniel Barrett scored his first goal as a Dragon on a corner kick to make it 5-1 in the 48th minute. Tesfaye completed his hat trick in the 54th minute off a pass from
Nicholas Mirecki, while
Biruk Yitayew scored a nifty goal into the corner in the 60th minute. The scoring wrapped up in the 73rd minute as
Carson Feeser scored against his former team to make it 8-1 at the buzzer.
Hernandez led the Dragons with seven shots, five shots on goal, one goal, and three assists. Feeser had six shots, three shots on goal, and a goal, while Tesfaye added four shots, three shots on goal, and his three goals. Yitayew and Mirecki each had three shots, while Giron-Ramos had two shots on goal, one goal, and two assists. Gugino made two saves for Howard.
Next up for the Dragons is a Thursday matinee against Frederick Community College on September 24 at 2:00 PM.
