Esports Weekly Round-Up: Week 1

Columbia, MD – The Dragons Esports teams started off their season strong last week with the Rocket League, Overwatch, League of Legends and Super Smash Bros Ultimate teams all making appearances in their season openers.

On Wednesday, September 22nd, the Super Smash Bros Ultimate team made their debut in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE).   Wyatt Cioffi led the Dragons with a 3-0 win over Snow College and Tyrone Boyd followed suit with a 3-0 win over Roughrider eSports.  Richard Machado followed on Thursday with a 3-0 win over Nassau Community College.  The Dragons are back in the action on Wednesday with three more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate matchups.

Both Rocket League teams took to the electronic pitch on Thursday, September 23rd to kick off their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) season strong with a win from both Team 1 and Team 2.  Team 2 took the field first with a 3-0 sweep of Clark University as captain Jeremy Hotchkiss (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) lead game three with a hat trick.  Giving up only three goals in all three matches, Team 1 lead by captain Ryan McCardle (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) took their first win of the season.  On Saturday, the Rocket League teams both participated in activation matches for the Mid-Atlantic Esports Conference (MAEC) where they will begin their season on Wednesday September 29th.

On Thursday the Overwatch team made their season debut in the NECC taking on Butler College.  The Dragons saw defeat in their first match with a 3-0 loss.  Getting back to the games on Friday, the Overwatch team lead by captains Jocef Dorsey (Laurel, MD/Homeschool) and Devin Dvorak made their debut in the NJCAAE and took the 2-1 win over the Barton Community College Cougars.  The Overwatch Dragons get a few days of rest and practice before taking on the Champlain College Beavers on Thursday September 30th at 7:00 PM for the NECC and returning to the NJCAAE competition on Friday, October 1 at 6:00 PM against the Pennsylvania Highlands Black Bears A Team.

League of Legends Team 1 came out with a big match against Valparaiso University to start off their season. After losing the first game, they came back strong in the second and longest game of the night as the Dragons fought for their first win.  Valpo came back even stronger in the third game, keeping the Dragons to a 24 minute slugfest and ultimately showing they were the stronger team of the night.  The Dragons return to the Summoner's Rift on Friday, October 1st where Team 1 will take on Newberry College and Team 2 will face New Jersey City University.
