Calinda Qualifies for Nationals as Dragons Impress at Liberty!

Lynchburg, VA - The final meet of the season saw the Howard Community College Dragons shine once again at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Tuesday!

The Dragons captured three medals and set seven personal records on an excellent day in central Virginia. Freshman sprinter Matthew Calinda (Hanover, MD/Meade) stole the show as he outright qualified for the NJCAA Nationals next week.

Highlights:
  • Matthew Calinda (Hanover, MD/Meade) finished second in the men's 400m dash, setting a new personal best and setting the second fastest time in HCC history for the 400m. Calinda's time was the 47th fastest in the NJCAA, qualifying him for the NJCAA Nationals next week. Aiden Moore (Beltsville, MD/St. Vincent Palotti) would come home fifth with a 50.90, while Mife Osinubu (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) and Nazeer England (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) finished seventh and eighth respectively.
  • Divine Rice (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) led the way in the men's 100m dash, finishing eighth in the qualifiers with a time of 10.70. Rice would set a personal record in the main event with a time of 10.70, good enough for third place. Rojae Campbell finished the qualifiers in 13th, while Emmanuel Addo (Columbia, MD/Hammond) came home in 18th.
  • Iyona Davis (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) qualified for the women's 100m dash with a sixth place finish in the preliminaries, finishing with a time of 12.16. Davis would finish third overall in the main event with a 12.13 to clinch the bronze medal and set a personal record. Aniya Clerisier (Orlando, FL/Wilde Lake) and Samone Haywood (Columbia, MD/Hammond) finished 11th and 12th in the preliminaries respectively, just missing the cut for the main event.
  • Pedro Egudu (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) set a season best result in the men's long jump, placing fifth with a 6.68m jump.
  • Chukwueloka Okafor (Burtonsville, MD/Paint Branch) had his best results of the season, placing fifth in the men's shot put with a 8.20m throw and seventh in the men's hammer throw with a 26.83m throw.
  • Cheyenne Ellis (Eldersburg, MD/Century) placed sixth in the women's shot put with a distance of 9.67m, then placed seventh in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 30.23m.
  • Larry Brent (Columbia, MD/St. Vincent Palotti) finished seventh in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 56.87.
  • Aiden Moore (Beltsville, MD/St. Vincent Palotti) set a personal record in the men's 200m dash, as he led the Dragons home with a ninth place finish and a time of 22.11. Divine Rice (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) finished tenth overall with a time of 22.16, while Matthew Calinda (Hanover, MD/Meade) came home 11th overall. Evan Taylor (Baltimore, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) finished 13th in the main event.
  • Iyona Davis (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) just missed out on the top ten in the women's 200m dash, finishing 11th with a time of 25.63 for a new personal record. Aniya Clerisier (Orlando, FL/Wilde Lake) came home 18th overall, while Samone Haywood (Columbia, MD/Hammond) finished 22nd.
  • Jayden Gallion (Glendale, MD/CMIT Academy) led the Dragons in the men's 800m, finishing eleventh with a new personal record of 1:56.54.
  • Ryan Thibaudeau (Fulton, MD/Reservoir) set a season best result in the men's 5000m, finishing 18th with a time of 17:04.84.
  • Brandon McMillen (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) set a new personal record in the men's 1500m with a time of 4:14.12.
Next up for the Dragons will be the NJCAA Nationals in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 15.
