Elon, NC - The Howard Community College Dragons continued their hot start to the 2026 track season with a strong showing at the Phoenix Invitational at Elon University.
Led by three golds from
Ameer Mowad (), the Dragons set another school record in the men's 4x100 relay, while also collecting two season best results and three personal bests in an excellent showing.
Sprints
- Ameer Mowad () was the star of the show for the Dragons, collecting gold in the men's 100m dash. Mowad clocked in an 11.03 in his run, while his teammate Demetrius Lewis () came home fifth with an 11.34. Roy Brooks-Foster (Millersville, MD/Old Mill), Daniel Warner (Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge), and Jared Porter () each finished inside the top-25, with Porter setting a season best performance with a 12.67.
- Mowad also collected gold in the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.72. He was joined on the podium by Lewis who finished third with a 22.28 time. Brooks-Foster, Warner, and Porter all finished inside the top-20 for the Dragons.
- Caleb Adams (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) led the Dragons in the men's 400m, finishing second overall with a 49.44, a new personal best. Jaylen Etheridge () also set a personal best in seventh with a time of 51.01. Richard Saunders () and Rayne Ogans () both cracked the top-15, while Evan Taylor (Baltimore, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) and Samuel Chukwuma () finished sixteenth and nineteenth to give Howard six runners in the top-20.
- Jayden Gallion (Glendale, MD/CMIT Academy) led the Dragons in the men's 800m with a fourth-place finish, clocking in at 2:03.06. Ben Fry (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) and Samuel Venegas (Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) both managed to finish inside the top-20.
- Katy Spence (Jessup, MD/Meade) made the top-ten in women's 200m dash with a time of 26.26, while Samone Haywood (Columbia, MD/Hammond) came home fifteenth with a time of 27.17.
- Samone Haywood (Columbia, MD/Hammond) finished fourteenth in the women's 100m dash with a time of 13.35.
- Daniel Warner (Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge) cracked the top-15 in the men's 110m hurdles, clocking in a time of 20.72 for a fourteenth-place finish.
- Katy Spence (Jessup, MD/Meade) set a personal best in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 17.41.
Distance
- Jason Winter's twentieth-place finish in the men's 3000m was the Dragons' lone distance race of the meet. Winter finished with a time of 10:44.83.
Throws
- Chukwueloka Okafor (Burtonsville, MD/Paint Branch) finished eleventh in the men's shot put with a distance of 8.39m and twelfth in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 27.36m.
- Simisola Aileru () cracked the top-20 in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 24.57m. Aileru made the top-25 in the women's shot put with a distance of 5.27m.
Jumps
- Chancellor DeRosier () saw his first action of the season in the men's long jump, finishing on the podium in third with a distance of 6.15m.
Relays
- One week after breaking the school record for the men's 4x100m relay, the Dragons did it again with a new record of 41.88. The quartet of Caleb Adams (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake), Jaylen Etheridge (), Demetrius Lewis (), and Ameer Mowad () took the top spot in Friday's race, while Rayne Ogans (), Roy Brooks-Foster (Millersville, MD/Old Mill), Richard Saunders (), and Samuel Chukwuma () finished sixth in the same race.
- Ben Fry (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake), Jayden Gallion (Glendale, MD/CMIT Academy), Samuel Venegas (Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake), and Rayne Ogans () took home the bronze in the men's 4x400m relay, finishing with a time of 3:36.61. Chancellor DeRosier (), Evan Taylor (Baltimore, MD/Mount Saint Joseph), Richard Saunders (), and Ameer Mowad () cracked the top-five with a 3:48.81.
The Dragons next head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. The meet will begin Thursday, March 19.
