Hobbs, NM - The 2026 track & field season came to an end last weekend, as the Howard Community College Dragons partook in the 2026 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Nationals at New Mexico Junior College.
Led by stellar freshman
Ameer Mowad in the sprints and returning sophomore
Matthew Calinda, the Dragons faced off against the best of the best in JUCO track. Both runners performed well, with Mowad breaking another school record.
Mowad took on the men's 100m and 200m dashes. The freshman was excellent, finishing third overall in his heat in the 100m and second in his heat in the 200m. Mowad's 100m time of 10.20 broke the HCC record previously set by Mowad at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational earlier this year.
In the 200m, Mowad finished second in his heat in a photo finish. His time of 20.60 was the 13th best total time of all 200m runners during the meet.
Calinda partook in the men's 400m dash. He finished seventh in his heat race with a time of 48.68, an excellent final showing as a Dragon for the sophomore.
Howard now looks ahead to the upcoming 2027 season, having set a new program standard for excellence this season. With multiple program records broken and two athletes nationally ranked for their events, the Dragons will be heavy favorites to win the Region 20 title in 2027 and return to the national stage.
