Columbia, MD - Howard Community College Track & Field hosted the first ever Region 20 Track & Field Championship at Howard Community College on Wednesday afternoon, and the Men's team ran away with the championship title. The Women's team with a dominating performance as well, finishing as the runner-up.
The Dragons Track & Field program is entering into their second season under the guidance of Head Coach Phillipe DeRosier Jr., racked up 82 points to claim the 2024 Region 20 title. As the host school, the meet brought together six teams that battled battled things out to the very end, including the Hagerstown Hawks, a powerhouse that has dominated in the region for decades. Men's track & field able to shut the hawks down, pushing a 27-point game between them. Hagerstown finished as the runner-up with 58 points, and Caroll CC placed third with 11 points.
Men's Highlights
Dominant performances by
Divine Rice (Columbia, MD/Long Reach), capturing first place in the 100m (10.72) and 200m (21.87) to tally up 5 points a piece towards the Dragons 82 final points.
Mife Osinubu (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) took the top podium as well, capturing second place in the 200 meters with a time of 22.10.
Dragons swept the podium in the 400 meters, where Osinubu stood atop the leader board for first place with a time of 50.08 seconds,
Nazeer England (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) followed in second place with a time of 51.45 seconds, and
Nicholas Haylock (Fort Meade, MD/Meade) captured third with a time of 51.65 seconds.
Brandon McMillen (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) captured second place in the 800m race with a time of 2:02:42, and captured third place in the 1500m race with a time of 4:21:94. Ryan Thibeaudeau dominated in the 5000m and 10,000m races, capturing second place in the 5000m with a time of 17:39:85, and first place in the 10,000m with a time of 35:59:72.
A first place finish for
Nicholas Haylock (Fort Meade, MD/Meade) in the 110 hurdles, capturing a time of 16.79. And two photo finishes for the Dragons in the 4x100 and 4x400,
Women's Highlights
A strong finish for the women's program, with a second place win during the Region 20 Track & Field Championship. Hagerstown Community College women's tema finished in first place with 75 points, the Dragons followed with 49 points, and Carroll CC placed third with 19 points.
The Dragons swept the podium in the 100m and 200m race, with Iyonna Davis taking first place in both races with a time of 12.57 in the 100m race, and a time of 26.18 in the 200m race.
Rashelle Buynum (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) earned second place in both races, with a time of 12.98 in the 100m, and 27.12 in the 200m.
Blessing Omoniyi (Laurel, MD/Laurel) captured third place for the Dragons in both the 100m and 200m race, with a time of 13.26 in the 100m and 28.66 in the 200m.
Howard swept the leader board in the long jump, with Buynum taking first, Omoniyi capturing second and Davis placing third.
Lynniya Whittaker sat atop the podium in the shotput and hammer, with a mark of 10.09m in the shot put and 37.57m in the hammer throw.
The Dragons will have a few weeks to continue strenghtening their skills in preparation of the National Tournament, beginning on Thursday, May 16th, until Saturday, May 18th in West Monroe, Louisiana.
