Gaillon, Mowad Lead Dragons in Regional Championships

Columbia, MD - Following an impressive performance at the 2026 Mid-Atlantic JUCO Track & Field Invitational, the Howard Community College Dragons solidified their status as a regional powerhouse. Hosting the meet, the Dragons made the most of their home-track advantage, finishing second overall in the men's team standings and fifth overall in the women's standings.

The Dragons' weekend was defined by a mix of record-shattering sprints, dominant relay performances, and technical precision in the field.

Men's Recap

The Men's team finished with 185 points, trailing only Hagerstown CC with 249 in a back-and-forth battle for the regional crown as the Hawks were able to come away with the championship trophy.

  • Sprints Dominance: Freshman sensation Ameer Mowad continued his historic season, asserting himself as the fastest man in the region. Mowad posted a blistering 10.64 in the 100m and a 21.18 in the 200m. Fellow freshman Caleb Adams added significant points with a strong 49.10 in the 400m just behind Matthew Calinda who finished second at 48.50.

    Jayden Gallion was dominant in his 800m first place finish at 1:57 along with a win in the 1500m at 4:14.

  • Relay Excellence: The Dragons' relay squads were the class of the field. The 4x400m team (Adams, Jaylen Etheridge, Demetrius Lewis Jr., Mowad) took gold with a time of 3:23, while the 4x800m team also secured a second place podium finish to keep Howard in title contention.

  • Field Events: Chancellor DeRosier led the charge in the pits, leaping 13.88m in the Triple Jump to secure a major victory. On the throws side, Eloka Okafor provided veteran leadership, scoring in both the Shot Put and Hammer Throw.

Women's Recap

The Women's team earned 50 points to take fifth place, with several standout performances on the day.

  • Spence Leads the Way: Freshman Katy Spence was the workhorse for the Dragons. She delivered standout performances in the 200m (26.05) and 400m (59.09), while also showcasing her versatility by scoring in the 100m Hurdles (15.50).

  • Sprint Presence: Sophomore Samone Haywood remained a consistent force in the short sprints, clocking a 12.64 in the 100m to finish third as well as getting fourth in the 200m at 26.66. Taneya Watson was close behind in fourth for the 100 m (13.01) and fifth in the 200m (26.90). Watson also took second in the long jump at 4.99m.

  • Strength in the Field: Simi Aileru anchored the Dragons in the throwing circle, earning crucial points in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 24.57m.

Looking Ahead

With athletes still looking to get national qualifiers, the Dragons next meet will be at Morgan State on April 17 and 18.
