Columbia, MD - Midway through September and Howard Community College athletics are flourishing. Men's soccer is ranked in the national top-ten, women's volleyball is undefeated, and women's soccer and cross country have looked mighty impressive to start their seasons.
With a packed week ahead, all fall sports will be in action along with some spring sport previews.
The action kicks off Tuesday at 6:00 PM as the Dragons' women's volleyball team welcome defending Region 20 champions Montgomery College to their arena. The long-awaited home opener will see the undefeated 5-0 Dragons take on a Montgomery squad that has struggled to start the 2026 campaign. The Dragons will have a chance to pull off the biggest win of head coach Jailyn Ivey's tenure in front of a packed house.
Volleyball continues their week on Thursday with a 6:00 PM home match against Frederick Community College. The Dragons bested Frederick 3-0 last season, but the Cougars team they will face this week is very different from last year's squad. Frederick is currently 3-1 on the season and has taken down some solid Region 20 teams. The Dragons will have their work cut out for them in this contest.
Thursday also sees men's and women's soccer travel to Baltimore to face rivals CCBC Essex at 5:00 and 7:00 PM respectively. Women's soccer will look to snap a two-game losing streak against an undefeated Essex team that is in contention for the top of Region 20. As for the men, they face a team they want to beat more than any other. The Knights bested the Dragons 1-0 in overtime to win last year's Region 20 championship game. The long-awaited rematch will see the Dragons carry a top-ten ranking into their showdown against an Essex squad ranked in the top-ten themselves. The game of the year in Region 20 will kick off at 7:00 PM.
Friday will shift the focus to cross country, as the Dragons travel to St. Mary's City, Maryland, for the Seahawk Cross Country Classic. Fresh off a second-place result in their opener, the Dragons will be eager to show what they can do against four-year competition.
Saturday belongs to women's sports, with volleyball and softball playing in a pair of doubleheaders. Volleyball will take on their second tri-match of the season, playing Chesapeake College and WVU Potomac State College at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM respectively. Hosts Chesapeake have started the year 2-3 and look much improved from last season, so the Dragons will have to be careful. As for Potomac State, they have started the season undefeated and could be a potential playoff opponent for the Dragons down the stretch.
Softball finishes the week Saturday afternoon, as they begin their fall schedule with a doubleheader against four-year Bowie State.
