Esports Sweeps Tripleheader In Wins Over Dartmouth, Ole Miss, DWU

Columbia, MD - The Howard CC esports program continued their amazing success as all three teams won in the same night against top opponents. The Overwatch team pulled off a massive upset over Ivy League Dartmouth College in a stunning 3-0 win, the League of Legends team kicked off their season with a dominating win over Ole Miss 2-0, and the Rocket League team continued to look unstoppable with a 3-0 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University.

In the first map of the night for the Overwatch team against Dartmouth, the Dragons made a strong bull rush to start and initially snatched the point. They were able to control it with great zoning out until at 71% they were overwhelmed by the Big Green who nearly won the point with a 99% control until Howard stole the point and game away to get the first objective. A similar story started in the second point as Howard earned the point first but could not hold it out. This time Dartmouth would not relent as they held the objective all the way through to take the second point. On the third point, the Dragons won the initial brawl for a third straight point and this time held it the entire time through to take a 1-0 map lead.

In the second map, the Dragons began on the offensive side and struggled at first to snare the first point. Once they were able to brawl their way through, the second and third points were a piece of cake as momentum carried them all the way to getting all three points. Switching sides to defense, the Dragons conceded the first point quickly but made a fantastic stand at the second point, ultimately giving way and Dartmouth was also able to grab the three points to send it to overtime. In the extra period, the Dragons played a flawless attack and snagged all three points before holding Dartmouth to a single point defensively to clinch the second map and the victory. The Dragons further added to their win in the third map as they once again dominated on the defensive side and were able to secure a 3-0 sweep.

The League of Legends team played their first match of the spring season against the University of Mississippi in the META Contender Series Invitational and continued their domination with an easy 2-0 sweep over Ole Miss.

The first game saw the two teams quite even in the early game until the mid-game team battles all went Howard's way as they used that momentum to snowball into an easy win. Abiola Monk (Ellicott City, MD/Wilde Lake) led the way with 16 knockouts as team captain Duy Phuong Nguyen (Kurland, Norway/Mailand videregående Skole) added nine knockouts and 21 assists.

Game two saw the Dragons clean up their early game mistakes as they totally dominated their opponents in a brisk 22 minute game. Andrew Wells (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) was unstoppable with 17 knock outs, Alex Petrusan (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) added 12 to his name, and support specialist Daniel Finke (Laurel, MD/DeMatha) had a game high 20 assists.

The Rocket League team continued their amazing spring season with a 3-0 rout over Dakota Wesleyan University. They improved to 5-0 in the META Invitational and will face off against fellow undefeated school Simon Fraser University on March 15 in a battle of heavyweights.
