Overwatch Wins National Championship

Columbia, MD - In just the second year of the esports program's existence at Howard Community College, the Dragons have won a national championship as the Overwatch team defeated Concordia University of Wisconsin 4-2 in the best of seven series.

The Dragons earned a spot in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) national tournament after winning the emergents conference championship in the fall season.

The eight team national tournament included the top teams from across the country in the emergents level. Howard won their first round match over Concordia Wisconsin 3-1 and then defeated Carthage College 3-1 in round two.

In the semifinals, the Dragons cruised by Marywood University in a 4-0 sweep to earn a spot in the finals. The championship battle saw a rematch with Concordia Wisconsin with the Dragons take the first two maps to get the early lead. Concordia won the next two maps to tie the match up at 2-2, but the Dragons buckled down and dominated the final two maps to claim the championship.

The Overwatch team was one of three Howard teams that earned a spot in the national tournament as the Rocket League team finished their season with an elite eight final while the League of Legends team was halted in the final four.
