Box Score 2 Ellicott City, MD - A couple of exciting games that saw both doubleheader matchups go to extra innings resulted in the Dragons falling the the Corning Red Barons 6-3 and 11-10 in 8 innings for both games.
Game one saw the Red Barons get ahead 3-0 early, but a
Samantha Hobert (Elkridge, MD/Howard) 2 RBI double off the left field fence to score
Madison Dzubak (Highland, MD/River Hill) and
Katelyn Burdette (Frederick, MD/Walkersville) pulled the Dragons back within striking range. Howard had a fantastic rally in the bottom of the fourth inning that had Burdette get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 3-3. Corning threatened to take the lead back in the top of the seventh inning with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. a wild pitch saw both runners move up, but the Dragons were able to gun down the lead runner as she tried to swipe home and
Sage Huber (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg) fired a missile home with
Danielle Thompson (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) applying the tag to maintain the tied score. Hobert would strike out the #3 and #4 hitters in order to get out of the jam. Corning would score three runs in the top of the eighth inning then shut down the Dragons in the bottom half to take game one for the visitors.
Game two had the Dragons jumping out to an early lead with
Ashleigh Gerber (Marriottsville, MD/Marriotts Ridge) and Hobert driving in runs in the bottom of the first. Another barrage in the bottom of the second had
Alyssa Kelly (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) and
Kasey Smith (Jessup, MD/Hammond) driving in runs while Hobert walked with the bases load to increase the Dragon lead to 5-1. Corning stormed back with a pair of two run home runs to retake the lead, but a
Kasey Smith (Jessup, MD/Hammond) double to deep right field scored Burdette to tie the game. Dzubak once again pinch ran for Smith and scored the go ahead run on another Hobert RBI single. Corning scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead back, but another answer for the Dragons saw Smith hit an RBI single down the left field line to plate Huber. A bizarre bottom of the fifth had
Madeline Lackey (Manchester, MD/Manchester Valley) and Huber reach base to start the inning. With runners on second and third, Lackey was thrown out trying to score on a Kelly ground out. Smith hit a blooper RBI single to left to score Huber followed by a Gerber single to load the bases. Burdette was able to score on a delayed steal of home to cut the lead to 10-9.
With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the seventh, Burdette was able to smack a dramatic game tying home run deep over the center field fence to send the game to extra innings. Corning was able to score in the top half of the eighth and the Dragons were unable to match in the bottom half.
The Dragons shuffled their schedule around and now travel to Hagerstown on Monday, March 27 for a pair of regional games at 3 PM & 5 PM.
